Compounding of tablets to suspension is simple and easy using the Vetasyst Unit.
The Vetasyst Unit can be used with a variety of volumes and excipients which are used and available around the world.
The Vetasyst Unit purchase ‘payback’ comes from the time savings achieved with reduced time required for crushing and efficiencies generated from in house compounding.
Most common drugs that vets want to compound into suspension can be simply compounded from tablets using this machine. Vets can then supply the drugs to the clients at their visit as they presently do with commercial medications.
Compounding tablets with the Vetasyst Unit is safe for the operator – no fume hoods etc is needed as the machine is all enclosed, this, dramatically reducing any issues with drug aerosolation and other OH & S issues associated with crushing, mixing and handling tablets.
Compounding in one step should reduce the chance of dilution that results from first crushing and then mixing.
Vets can monitor consistency of their own medication where compounded medication from a pharmacy may vary slightly every time it is made. Making it from tablets which the vet is familiar with is more likely to create similar results as when using the tablet medications (especially when mixed with water). Pharmacists use raw ingredients and their own familiar excipients – raw ingredients may not have the same effect as those in commercial tablets as the excipients and ingredients in the tablets can enhance the active ingredient, also the source of active ingredient may be of different quality to that obtained by the pharmacist. Vets don’t really know what excipients the pharmacist use – some are toxic to animals eg sorbitol is toxic to birds, many excipients use sorbitol instead of sugar. Some pharmacy produce medicines have been tested and shown to have significantly lower active ingredient than that labeled.

Pat is a registered specialist in Avian Medicine and Surgery, an ANZCVS Fellow and co-owner of Melbourne Bird Veterinary Clinic. A graduate of Sydney and Monash Universities and University of Pennsylvania, she has been a pioneer in Bird Medicine and Surgery over many years and a frequent speaker at international conferences with numerous conference papers, book chapters and scientific publications to her name. She enjoys working with colleagues at MBVC to deliver quality, specialist care to birds and their owners and training avian veterinarians of the future. She is excited about the potential for the Vetasyst unit to revolutionise in-clinic compounding in veterinary practices and has collaborated with Dr Gosbel in studies investigating and supporting this. Now semi-retired, she is also engaged in restoration of two heritage properties as well as rewilding and biolinks projects.
Dr Matthew Gosbell is an avian veterinarian with over 30 years of clinical experience and is the co-owner and Director of Melbourne Bird Veterinary Clinic, one of Australia’s leading bird-only veterinary hospitals. He has a special interest in avian medicine and surgery, diagnostic imaging, clinical therapeutics, and advancing practical innovations that improve patient care.
Dr Gosbell graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1994, attained Membership of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (Avian Health) by examination, and completed an ANZCVS-approved residency training program in Avian Medicine and Surgery in 2020. He has taught avian medicine and surgery at the University of Melbourne for almost 20 years and regularly lectures to veterinarians and veterinary nurses throughout Australia.
He has authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and peer-reviewed conference proceedings, with research interests including avian infectious diseases, diagnostic imaging, cannabidiol therapy, and veterinary drug compounding. His recent work has focused on evaluating novel ultrasonic compounding technology to improve the accuracy, efficiency, and consistency of in-clinic pharmaceutical compounding.
Dr Gosbell collaborates with Vetasyst in the clinical evaluation of ultrasonic compounding technology. His research is conducted using rigorous, evidence-based methodologies, reflecting his commitment to advancing veterinary medicine through objective scientific investigation and continual clinical innovation.
